Who We Are
Central Carolina Lodge 31 of the South Carolina Fraternal Order of Police is an organization that supports our local law enforcement members and the community. Our lodge was chartered in Sumter, SC in July of 2016 and is a subordinate lodge to the Grand Lodge of the FOP that is based in Nashville, TN. The FOP is a member driven organization made up 330,000 plus law enforcement individuals and associates in the United States and around the world. FOP was created to assist law enforcement officers in various ways; from monetary donations to officers in need, to providing free education and discount benefits and also legal defense plans.
In addition to assisting law enforcement, FOP is also a charitable 501(c) 8 non-profit organization. Central Carolina Lodge 31 has several pet projects and causes that we support in our local community as a way to give back to the citizens of Sumter, Clarendon and Lee counties. We mainly focus on the children as our target group, since many times kids do not understand that law enforcement are their friends and we are not people to be afraid of. We want to encourage the young people to know that they can come to us if they need help, and we feel that our programs are good ways to form positive relationships with them.
- Cops and Bobbers is our annual spring time event. We take kids from local children’s homes on a fishing adventure at Tracey’s Camp in Pinewood, SC. During this event we show the kids what it is like to enjoy a day on the water, away from cell phones and video games, often providing them with their first fishing experience. In past years we have received generous donations from KFC and Perfection Bakery to provide the kids with lunch and breakfast while they are with us. Typically we entertain about 20 kids and their chaperones for this event.
- Cops and Kids is our Christmas campaign. We take kids from local children’s homes on a shopping trip and lunch. We pair each child with an FOP member officer and give them set amount of funds, they are allowed to shop for whatever their heart desires within that price range (unless it is deemed off limits by the staff of the children’s home). We have been able to provide an increasing number of gift cards over the past 3 years thanks to monetary donations from our local businesses. After they have shopped, we take them to lunch. Golden Corral of Sumter has graciously donated many lunches to our cause during the past few years and we are grateful for their generosity.
- What we are working on: We are currently developing a scholarship program for local students, stay tuned for more information in the coming months.
